Lenard Brown is an internationally known producer, writer, arranger and entrepreneur. He is one of the original members of the famous quartet called The Controllers. The group was made up of: Reginald McArthur, Ricky Lewis, Larry McArthur and Lenard Brown. They recorded their first single called “Right On Brother, Right On,” which became a hit while the teens were still attending Fairfield High School.

The members were constantly taken out of school to sing. The Controllers became famous for their incredible stage performances. Their most popular song, “Somebody’s got to win, Somebody’s got to lose,” catapulted them into stardom. The group went on to create 16 hit records on the billboard charts.

The Controllers have traveled all over the world, appearing multiple times on Soul Train, MTV, BET, HBO and at Carnegie Hall. They sold out radio city music hall for two nights in a row and have performed in stadiums packed with more 90,000 people. The Controllers have opened shows for James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, The Temptations – just about every major artist that you can possibly name. Stevie Wonder even made a guest appearance on harmonica for their first MCA single, “Crushed”.

Lenard Brown and Reginald McArthur created the highly rated and very popular syndicated talk show, Inside The Juke Joint. Together the two have hosted more than 450 times. Listeners tune in to hear artists, songwriters, arrangers and musicians talk about the industry, their careers and lives.

At the tender age of 24 (1973) Tony Evans, was contacted by a radio show producer from Houston (KHCB). This man had contacted Dallas Theological Seminary, where Tony was a junior in the ThM program, asking for great preaching content to put on his program for free. One of Tony’s professors recommended him. Thus began the public broadcasting of Dr. Tony Evans. Recorded in a tiny studio on the seminary campus, Tony spent the next few years faithfully preaching into a microphone for a crowd unseen in Houston.

Nearly a decade later, The Urban Alternative was formed in 1981 when requests for Dr. Evans’ sermons came in so frequently from his Houston and Dallas radio broadcasts that Mrs. Lois Evans, co-founder of the ministry, began fulfilling orders. Mrs. Evans used her business skills to organize, develop and expand the outreach and growth of the ministry.

I have an unusual way of looking at the world. My wife, Sharon, says I’m weird, and, truthfully, I am weird. But there’s a reason. Starting from nothing, by the time I was 26, I had a net worth of a little over a million dollars. I was making $250,000 a year. That’s more than $20,000 a month net taxable income. I was really having fun. But 98% truth is a lie. That 2% can cause big problems, especially with $4 million in real estate. I had a lot of debt—a lot of short-term debt—and I’m the idiot who signed up for the trip.

The short version of the story is that debt caused us, over the course of two and a half years of fighting it, to lose everything. We didn’t tell anyone what was going on, but if we had to do it again, we would learn from the wisdom of others who have been through it. We soon learned that we weren’t the only ones at the bottom. Barbie and Ken (you know, the couple that appears to be perfect—perfect clothes, perfect car, perfect house) are broke, and I don’t take financial advice from broke people anymore.

After losing everything, I went on a quest to find out how money really works, how I could take control of it, and how I could have confidence in handling it. I read everything I could get my hands on. I interviewed older rich people—people who made money and kept it. That quest led me to a really, really uncomfortable place: my mirror. I came to realize that my money problems, worries and shortages largely began and ended with the person in my mirror. I also realized that if I could learn to manage the character I shaved with every morning, I would win with money. I went back to my first love, real estate, to eat and to get out of debt. Along the way, I began another path—the path of helping others, literally millions of others, take the same quest to the mirror. That path led to starting Ramsey Solutions. We’ve been helping people change their lives for over 20 years, and we’re not slowing down.

I’ve paid the “stupid tax” (mistakes with dollar signs on the end) so you don’t have to, and I’m here to tell you that whoever you are, wherever you came from, and however deep of a mess you might be in right now, you can get out of it. Pastor D. Reed accepted the call to minister at the age of 12. After graduating high school, he attended Tyndale College to further his ministerial education. Though he was a student there for a time, he attributes most of his biblical learning and ministry training to his late father in the ministry Dr. Charles Alexander. After over 30 years of preaching and ministering Pastror D. Reed has once again answered God’s call. This time to pastor. He says, “I am humbled that God would choose to continue to use such an imperfect vessel to be his spokesperson. I accept his call and I thank him for his mindfulness of me and for his direction.”

Pastor D. Reed is also an accomplished musician and recording artist. He has written and recorded numerous songs and albums. All of his natural gifts and abilities are brought to bare in his ministry. They all work together to create a unique and fresh approach to ministry.

Vern Benom Grimsley

Vern Grimsley was born in Garden City, Kansas December 22, 1940. His father was a college teacher and coach, and mother was a homemaker that had studied to be in the medical field. Vern was nine years old when his father died of heart failure. Vern attended Culver Military Academy for his freshman and sophomore years in high school. He then returned to Garden City, Kansas and developed an avid interest in radio, becoming a DJ while finishing high school and also winning the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce speaking contest which included a trip to Washington DC and the meeting of President Dwight D Eisenhower in the Oval Office. Vern also functioned as the interim preacher at his local church for a few months while the church found and hired the official minister. He would write and deliver the sermons but not be involved in the other official church activities. Vern’s speaking and writing talents were evident and recognized at an early age. Vern pursued his studies at the University of Kansas where he majored in Philosophy with a minor in Psychology graduating in spring of 1963.

Vern married his high school sweetheart Nancy Smithe in 1960, and both finished college at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. He was a good student and an excellent researcher, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Vern received a scholarship to attend Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. The young couple moved to Berkeley in late summer of 1963 and Vern started seminary that fall while Nancy went to work at the University of California in Berkeley in the Art History department.

The seminary at Pacific School of Religion was dominated by “social action.” The main interest of the professors was political in nature; sit-ins, protest marches and voter registration. Vern’s interest was the understanding and insights of the great religious leaders concerning man’s relationship with God and God’s relationship with man and most of all a clearer understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus.

Through this semester at Pacific School of Religion Vern and Nancy walked the Berkeley campus after school and work talking to each other and praying for guidance as to God’s direction for their ministry. Nancy was the breadwinner and Vern the Preacher; together they arrived at the decision to leave seminary after one semester, give back the scholarship and set sail on their own faith venture.

Nancy would continue to work at the University in Berkeley and Vern would pursue an independent study of the great thinkers of history, religious leaders of mankind and a deeper understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus, while he also preached anywhere he could. Nancy’s working position with the University of California allowed Vern to have access to the libraries and stacks of literature that enabled his independent study.

While in seminary he became the youth minister of a large church in Oakland and continued this ministry after leaving Pacific School of Religion. One Sunday the senior minister of this church was absent and Vern was called to deliver the service. In the audience was an acquaintance from Garden City, Kansas who was also the manager of KFAX radio station of the San Francisco Bay area. This person remembered Vern, liked the sermon and offered Vern a chance to produce a 15-minute broadcast for KFAX. This was the beginning of the Spiritual Renaissance® Broadcast; the first broadcast was on December 12, 1964.

This was a fermenting time in Vern’s ministry; it was really a faith adventure. He was engaged in independent study of the great spiritual thought of mankind, deepening understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus, writing and producing radio broadcasts and the growing conviction that he needed to engage the general public in discussions concerning the meaning of life and man’s relationship with God. He felt compelled to publicly preach, to directly engage the public in a one-on-one challenge to think and discuss their personal relationship with God.
